Personal Checking Accounts

A checking account is a type of deposit account generally used for daily expenses and day-to-day cash withdrawals. Your money can be accessed through a debit card for purchases made at stores, online, and more, or you can use your checking account to retrieve physical cash at an ATM.

While there are many differences between the two, one of the easiest ways to remember the differences is to think of a checking account as short-term storage of your money, whereas a savings account is for long-term storage. Checking accounts are designed to be accessed up to multiple times per day, to help pay for things like groceries, gas, and entertainment as you go about your day. On the other hand, savings accounts tend to have limits on how many times you can access the money contained within, as these accounts are designed to help you build up your savings through interest rates and other forms of dividends.

By design, most checking accounts usually don’t earn interest, since they’re not designed for the same long-term storage of your money as savings accounts are. The minimum age to open a checking account will vary by institution.  Genisys allows Checking accounts to be opened as young as 12 years old with a guardian on the account.  If you are at least 18 and a currently-enrolled college student, you may also be able to open our Student Checking Account, perfect for college students who need quick access to their money!
